First Time: A Place of Belonging
By: MacKenzie Pinkerton
It’s a sunny Saturday as a small hint of light peaks into your room from outside. You just woke up after sleeping in far longer than you anticipated. You stretch your arms out wide over your head and give a big yawn. Scratching your well rested head, you think to yourself, what should I do today? You walk to your window and open the blinds which momentarily blinds you from the piercing sun. As your eyes adjust to the outside world you see your car sitting lonesome in the driveway. The rims of the wheels are mud streaked and black from driving on the highway. Bugs cover the front bumper and mud spots cover each side from when you had to drive down a dirt road the other day. Your windshield is streaked with pollen and dust. You frown as you look at your car. Poor car, it’s so dirty. A thought crosses your mind and you begin to smile as you now know what to do with your day. As you climb into your driver’s seat, you turn on your car with a smile. You know exactly where you’re going. Thoughts begin to flood your mind of the last time you went to that carwash for the first time. You pulled in not knowing what to expect. A young girl with the biggest smile greeted you as you pulled up to the kiosk.
“Hi, how are you today?”
“Have you been here before?”
“No problem, we’re going to take care of you today.”
“Would you like the inside and out done today?”
“Great, just wait for that gate arm to go up and you’ll be good to go through the carwash.”
“Have a nice day!”
Wow, that was easier than you thought it would be. You begin to pull around and notice there’s another young smiling person guiding you to a moving conveyor built. You suddenly feel so fancy as you’ve never seen a carwash like this before. He guides you in ever so slowly and tells you to stop. A voice from the outside tells you to put your car in neutral and you can feel the push of the belt slightly lunge you forward. Sprinkles of water fall lightly from the front of your car to the back. Blue soap begins to cover your entire window and lights flash rainbows of color. You suddenly feel like you’re about to ride some fantasy Disney ride. Smells of sweet berries fill your nose and sounds of machines shake you from your thoughts. Big blue brushes begin scrubbing your car top to bottom as you move forward on the belt. More sprinkles of water fall onto your car as they wash away the blue soap. Fast air blows out of long green tubes and begins blowing all the water droplets off your car. By the time you get to the end of the tunnel,
you wished it wasn’t over. A light shines brightly for you to put your car in drive and go. You accelerate forward and exit the tunnel. You pull over to the side and get out to inspect your car. Your eyes grow wide and your jaw drops. Was this really your car? It looked brand spanking new! Bugs were gone, mud was gone, streaks were gone, it was all gone. You shake your head away from the memory. You now realize how much you want to relive
that first time at that carwash. You now quickly put your car in drive. As you drive to that carwash, your heart begins to race in anticipation. You look ahead and there it is…Splash Carwash. You smile as you pull into the lot and see that same girl as before smiling brightly at you, ready to welcome you to the best carwash you could ever think of.
